Interpretation of constant suction direct shear test

چکیده

Constant suction direct shear test enables the understanding of failure mechanism in rainfallinduced landslides. It can be conducted using a conventional apparatus with some modifications. The constant is carried out two stages. In first stage, unsaturated soil specimen consolidated to target net normal stress and matric then sheared second stage. Matric usually controlled axis-translation principle. commonly observed that an shows strain-hardening behaviour at large displacements making determination difficult. Hence, objective this study critically examine tests analysis results obtain strength parameters for soils. data were collated from literature. was found interpretation has inconsistencies: (1) taking arbitrary displacement strain or limit, dependent on size apparatus, (2) correcting only contact area. effect these consequences range negligible significant. resolved by plotting stresspath plot. effects area correction are shown almost small horizontal less than 2 mm both square circular boxes. A more consistent demonstrated where inconsistencies considered.

Studying the effect of roughness on soil-geotextile interaction in direct shear test

Abstract One of the methods of increasing soil resistance against failure is soil reinforcement using geosynthetics. Soil-geosynthetic interactions are of great importance and are affected by friction and adhesion at their interface. Soil gradation, contact surface roughness and geotextile density are among the factors affecting soil-geotextiles interaction this study, to investigate the eff...

Numerical Discrete Element Simulation Of Soil Direct Shear Test

One of the most common methods to measure soil mechanical properties (namely cohesion and internal friction angle) is direct shear box test. In this paper the development of a three-dimensional (3D) discrete element soil model for simulation of a cohesive soil’s direct shear test is presented. The aim was to calibrate the properties of the Hertz-Mindlin with bonding contact model available in E...

Particle Size Effect on Shear Strength of Granular Materials in Direct Shear Test

The effect of particle size on shear strength of granular materials are investigated using direct shear tests. Small direct shear test (60 mm by 60 mm by 24 mm deep) were conducted for particles passing the sieves with opening size of 2.36 mm. Meanwhile, particles passing the standard 20 mm sieves were tested using large direct shear test (300 mm by 300 mm by 200 mm deep). The large direct shea...

Discrete-continuum Analysis of Shear Banding in the Direct Shear Test

The direct shear test is a widely used method of determining peak and critical state strength parameters for soil and for soil-manufactured material interfaces. However, stress conditions inside the box during shear are not well known. This paper presents a new micromechanics-based approach that modifies existing relationships between plane strain and direct shear friction angles taking into ac...

Interpretation of Shear Wave Birefringence

We present an original method for estimating local shear wave birefringence properties for 3D surface P to S converted waves. To accomplish this we approach the problem using reverse VSP (RVSP). The method works in the pre-stack domain and uses the P waves converted to S as shear wave sources. We solve the transmission problem using the propagator matrix method. The importance of this method is...
